Working on Behalf of SSE, we have recently completed a BMS strategy for the University of Glasgow. The University of Glasgow has a diverse estate, consisting of everything from grand historic halls to ultra modern teaching blocks. It is also at the beginning of a ten year £1bn estate expansion and development plan.

Our role was to write a BMS strategy to accommodate the current and future state of the universities portfolio. Our first role was to identify the status quo. To do so we undertook a site survey to identify not only the existing BMS type, functionality, location and coverage, but also to understand how the BMS was operationally levered to support the estate teams deliverables. We then derived the desired future state via a workshop and discussion, which was focused on identifying the systems current challenges and future aspirations.

The strategy creation process focused on delivery a resilient, futureproof infrastructure and operationalised BMS. The largest challenge in doing so was ensuring that the strategy was horizontally and vertically aligned with a large suite of existing estate strategies, plans and objectives.

The strategy was successfully delivered on time and on budget over a ten day period, and is now being used to drive system investment and improvement.
